Last Chance for Viloria

On Sunday afternoon at the Araneta Coliseum in Manila, Philippines, Brian Viloria takes on Ulisis Solis for the WBC jr. flyweight title. It was a title that was once held by 'the Hawaiian Punch'. But he would make all of one defense of that green belt, and since then it's been an increasingly frustrating process for Viloria to recapture it.

Viloria realizes that if he doesn't get it done now, he most likely has run out of chances to ever call himself a world champion again.

"I'm giving myself here, the last chance," he admitted to Maxboxing a couple of weeks ago via cell phone from Oxnard, before he left for the Philippines. "A lot of people thought that I ran out of chances, but for me, this is really important for my career. I've taken this really seriously the past few months. Even from the start of last year, I've put a string of five wins together. But I know that once I get another world title shot, that's probably going to be the most important shot in my life."

For all the talk of how easy it is for today’s contemporary fighters to win world titles, the reality is that it's still very difficult to do so. Only the very best (and sometimes, fortunate) ever get to have a major world title belt around their waist. On February 28th, Viloria a 2000 U.S. Olympian, saw his Olympic teammate Rocky Juarez come up just short, again, in pursuit of a title when he fought to a draw against WBA featherweight. continue
